It is merely toward wind up this begins to break down, nevertheless smack-right up finale rescues it in the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you will smartly dialogued, it’ll have no high problem inside life down its incredibly ugly title.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin told you “The film movements within a simple pace, the fresh new discussion is actually slick and you will characterisations basically productive. The latest film’s creator and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up a great multidimensional chess online game, to possess mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sibling (Nina Foch) has worked in the gambling enterprise and old a corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic script, new cast’s suavely managed body language out of love and risk, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may fashionably cocky photo (along with their governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet intricate spectacle an invisible classic of the style.” [ ten ]

Whilst area pursue a common development, the latest characterizations are fresh plus the activities sufficient so you can overbalance. Dialogue try terse and relevant, avoiding the psychological, phoney touch. Unusual cam bases show up on occasion in order to escalate appeal and you can briefly arrest the interest. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, increasing given that director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, unique blogger and you will member music producer, including aids in making this a silky design.” [ 11 ]

Evelyn Keyes takes on the good nothing lady whom brings out this new finest in your and you can Ellen Drew ‘s the sleek and you may slinky vixen whom will get him for the jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty just like the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does a new in a position journey since a tired cops inspector exactly who fundamentally shuts the scenario. A great amount of ingesting and you will puffing is done because of the all the alarmed.” [ 12 ]
